Two men were fortunate to escape with their lives following a single-vehicle accident early Saturday morning on Chemainus Road near Saltair Road.

“It took out a telephone pole and ended up in one of the fields out there,” said Chemainus Fire Department chief Al Irwin.

One man was ejected from the vehicle and Irwin said the jaws of life was required to take off the roof and doors to free the other occupant.

Dave Wright noted on social media a friend of his was the first on the scene and the two men seemed to be in bad shape, but still talking.

“They were both talking and moving, but had to cut the roof off, but I think they will be OK,” reported that friend, Tyler Milne.

“Was pretty nuts. Didn’t look good when I got there. But after talking to them for a while, I think they will be fine.”

Three trucks from the Chemainus Fire Department, police cars from both the Ladysmith and North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachments and South Island Highway Patrol, and two ambulances were on the scene. The injured were transported immediately to Cowichan District Hospital and their present condition is unknown.

“They’re very, very lucky,” said Irwin. “It was a serious accident.”

Milne made the call to 911 and stayed with the pair until first responders arrived.

Telus workers were at the site to repair a sheered-off pole Saturday.
