Two people were hurt and the Roberts Street and Trans-Canada Highway intersection was again interrupted for a period of time after a crash last week.

Emergency services were called out Oct. 7 at 10:45 a.m. to the intersection, where two SUVs and a car collided.

RCMP report that the SUV, driven by a 75-year-old man, was attempting to cross the highway from Transfer Beach when it collided with a northbound car on the highway driven by a 36-year-old woman. A luxury SUV that had been in the left turn lane was also struck and sustained minor damage.

Based on the high speed and impact of the collision it was decided to call in the air ambulance to transport the car’s driver to Victoria hospital. The driver of the SUV that had been crossing the highway was taken to hospital in an ambulance. As of press time, both drivers were in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We were able to manage traffic through town a little bit better than in the past thanks to the town’s infrastructure services providing flaggers at key locations,” said Ladysmith fire chief Chris Geiger, whose crew attended the incident.

Traffic southbound, on the highway was held up for more than an hour which prompted hundreds of drivers to detour using First Avenue and Fourth Avenue.

According to RCMP, the incident is still under investigation, with initial indications being that the car failed to stop for a red light which resulted in the collision.
