A thief made off with a child-sized wooden canoe in the evening hours of Dec. 26, according to North Cowichan/Duncan RMCP.

A photo of the man carrying the canoe away from its home at the Le’lun’uy’lh Daycare (Cowichan Tribes Daycare) on River Road, was recently shared and it was only after that publicity that the theft was reported to police.

“Crimes such as these can only be solved with the help of our community and it is fantastic that someone shared this image,” said RCMP Const. Erin Stevenson. She’s hopeful the individual who took the photo or anyone else with information related to the theft will contact the police with the details.

“It is a terrible shame that the children will miss their wooden canoe. I really hope the community will be able to come together to get it returned to them,” said Const. Bert Calvo with the Indigenous Policing Services Unit.

Those with information can call the detachment at 250-748-5522 or provide their information to Cowichan Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 1-800-222-8477.
