The District of Sooke is refusing to pay $296,000 as final payment on the Sooke Road roundabout project unless the province corrects construction deficiencies.

Rob Howat, the district’s director of development services, told the Sooke News Mirror there are several deficiencies that both the province and the municipality have identified, including a white stain on the brick sidewalk encircling the roundabout and a “few other construction deficiencies.”

The roundabout project was completed in the fall of 2015.

“I was sort of hoping and anticipating they would get to it quicker,” said Howat, pointing out the delay is not unusual.

Transporation Ministry crews also had other work to deal after the roundabout construction was complete, including relocating a signal junction box at Murray Road and Highway 14.

“The ministry has reached out to staff at the District of Sooke for clarification on any deficiencies or other issues related to the Sooke roundabout project that was completed in 2015,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Sooke roundabout cost $9.1 million, with the district contributing $3.1.

Work on the project included a traffic roundabout, which fuses Sooke Road, Brownsey Boulevard and Evergreen Centre into one loop, gutters, concrete sidewalks, driveway access points, shoulder widening and street lighting.
