The final chapter on construction of the new library is nearing completion.
Workers are busy completing the last updates to the new Sooke branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library on Wadams Way.
“This beautiful round building is equitable to its core,” said Lorelee Parker, VIRL library manager for Sooke and Port Renfrew.
“Public libraries bridge the divide between serving future techno wizards in our maker spaces and today’s disadvantaged in our chairs. Sooke’s new branch is a magnificent expression of the community’s commitment to the very best for everyone.”

From the outside, the building appears to be ready to welcome its first patron, David Carson, director of corporate communications for VIRL, said.
“On the inside, workers are busily completing the final updates to the space to ensure the state-of-the-art new library has all the necessary amenities and features to maximize public use and enjoyment,” he said.
The $7-million library will offer a diverse collection of multi-use spaces and more throughout the 13,412-square-foot facility.
“The iconic circular design will become a cornerstone of the community,” Carson said.
He said it would include an exciting opening day collection curated for the community, increased staffing, expanded hours of operation, an expanded program schedule, a children’s area, fireplace lounge area, laptop bar, study space, and meeting rooms.
Since construction began, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the timeline and availability of resources.
“As a result of supply chain uncertainty, it is impossible to pin a precise opening date to the library at this time,” Carson said.
It is projected to open to the public this spring.
“This project has been years in the making, and it is exciting to see it so near completion,” said Gaby Wickstrom, chair of the VIRL board.
“This library is sure to become a centrepiece and focal point in the development and growth of central Sooke. I cannot wait to tour the library when the doors open.”
