The Strathcona Regional District has issued a smoke advisory for Sayward.
Due to increased winds, the area around Sayward may be impacted by smoke and reduced air quality. The smoke is coming from the Newcastle Creek Wildfire, which has not left containment lines and is still held, as of Tuesday morning. However, it will continue to create variable amounts of smoke due to different weather conditions.
The Coastal Fire Centre has monitored the area via helicopter and has not found evidence of it spreading, or new fires.
Smoke may cause mild irritation and discomfort but can result in a dry cough, sore throat and difficulty breathing. People with pre-existing health conditions, respiratory infections, older adults, pregnant women, children and infants are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for coastal areas along the Strait of Georgia for northwest winds gusting up to 70 kmh. The winds will develop late Tuesday afternoon, and continue until Wednesday morning.
