A missing man with a mental health warrant was able to evade police for a week before they announced he had been found safe Thursday (Oct. 7).

Robert Gray, 30, was first reported missing Oct. 1 by Sidney and North Saanich RCMP. At that time, he had last been seen Sept. 29 paddling offshore near Tuam Road in North Saanich.

On Oct. 6, Saanich police got involved, having spotted Gray near the intersection of McKenzie Avenue and Quadra Street. Officers saw him several times on Wednesday, but he was able to flee. He was seen running through backyards on McBriar and Ambassador avenues and was later seen near Greenridge Crescent and Quadra Street around 3:30 p.m.

Police said there were concerns about Gray’s well-being, and claimed he “poses a danger to himself and possibly others.”

On Thursday evening, Saanich police said Gray had been found safe.
