A prospective motion to examine renaming the Regional District of Nanaimo has been pulled and the region’s name will remain the same.
Teunis Westbroek, Qualicum Beach mayor and RDN director, informed the board in late February that he would bring a motion to Tuesday night’s regular board meeting, seeking development of a renaming process, but decided against it after hearing from the public.
“Bill [Yoachim, RDN Nanaimo director] and I talked about it and we felt there was very little support,” said Westbroek. “Also from feedback I got in my own community, very little support, only one positive comment. So I think it’s best not to push a rock uphill and if there’s no support and people aren’t interested, then I’m not going to force the issue.”

Westbroek said he gave notice initially because the regional district is going through an initiative to replace signage and thought it a good time to examine the topic. Changing letterhead and business cards would have been fairly inexpensive, he said.
“We’ll see, but there has to be more support than what we’ve heard so far,” said Westbroek when asked if he would revisit the topic in the future.
The Regional District along the Salish Sea was a name that had been suggested.
