Taxpayers are currently on the hook for $1,500 worth of damage after a young driver was nabbed after doing burnouts in the grass at Parksville Community Park.

Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman reported that on April 18, just before midnight, police were contacted by a sharp-eyed resident who lives near the park. The caller stated that there was a vehicle doing burnouts on the grass. The vehicle had apparently been driven over a section of sidewalk and dividers to enter and exit the locked park.

Oceanside RCMP officers were able to intercept the vehicle nearby and arrest the young driver, who had borrowed the family vehicle.

“This senseless act will hopefully encourage people to have a conversation with the young drivers that they know,” said Foreman,” who pointed out that using a vehicle to cause damage is defined as mischief under the Criminal Code and can lead to arrest or recovery of damages from the vehicle owner.
