Ucluelet RCMP are investigation a spur-of-the-moment Harbour Lights Sail Past event that took place on Dec. 22 for possible violation of Provincial Health Orders (PHO).
“A complaint is currently being investigated and at this time there have been no charges laid,” detachment commander Sgt. Steve Mancini told the Westerly on Dec. 29.
If charged, event organizers could face a $2,300 fine and those who attended the event may be subject to a $230 fine, Sgt. Mancini says.
The Dec. 22 vessel parade included about five decorated boats and a group of glowing kayaks. It was reported that a group of spectators gathered on Ucluelet’s Whiskey Dock the night the holiday celebration took place.
“The Ucluelet RCMP would like to remind the public that the current Provincial Health Order remains in effect until midnight Jan. 8, 2021. This Order includes a variety of restrictions one of which prohibits anyone from holding an event at a private residence or vacation accommodation where persons present are not occupants,” said Sgt. Mancini, adding that there are some exemptions, which are listed on the BC Government Website.
“While we can appreciate these restrictions have made it a strange and difficult holiday season for some, we ask that everyone continue to follow the Order to ensure the safety of the entire community. Should anyone have any questions regarding the current order feel free to contact the Ucluelet Detachment for further clarification,” Mancini said.
The Ucluelet Harbour Lights Sail Past is a much-loved annual community Christmas event generally hosted by the Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce.
In 2019, the vessel parade was cancelled due to lack of boater participation. The Ucluelet Chamber declined to comment on the impromptu Dec. 22, 2020, holiday gathering.
