RCMP called in the dogs on Saturday (Dec. 5) in Hilliers.
According to Cst. Blake Manchur, with the Central Vancouver Island RCMP Traffic Services, road checks were set up close to Hilliers and the Highway 19 interchange, also know as Exit 60 into Qualicum Beach, when an individual approached the road check at approximately 8 p.m.
“He (the individual) made an indication that he didn’t have a driver’s licence and then fled,” said Manchur.

The officer pursued the driver and soon found the vehicle unoccupied in a ditch. Manchur said the officer could hear thrashing in the bushes and called for the Police Dog Services, which were able to pick up the trail. The man eventually came out of the bushes and was apprehended without incident.
“He had a dog with him and that made things a bit problematic at first,” said Manchur, adding it was determined the driver’s dog did not pose a threat.
The driver is expected to face both criminal charges as well as Motor Vehicle Act violations.
