Two families were evacuated who lived along Island Road after 1,160 millimetres of rain fell in November – the most anywhere on the Island.

Port Renfrew Fire Chief William Toumlin said while the community remained relatively unscathed compared to communities on the mainland, some roads are seeing erosion.

Traffic was diverted due to flooding along the Pacific Marine Route near Deering Flats, and the road is down to one lane along Parkinson Road due to part of the road eroding down the hillside.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said repairs are starting next week on the failed culvert on Parkinson Road. They added work to repair riverbank erosion along Island Road continue and are on schedule to be completed by the end of the week.

In a previous interview with Black Press, Toumlin said he was impressed with EMCON’s response and presence in Port Renfrew.

“They’re doing their best. The ECMON truck has been coming through here daily,” he said. “I’m impressed with that. They’ve been putting out sandbags and laying the one-way warning signs on the roads. I’ve got no complaints.”

Toumlin added that the province’s contractor for emergency highway repairs had been inundated since the flooding, with most resources being focused on harder hit areas.
