A dog died from its injuries after being attacked late Tuesday morning at the Esquimalt Lagoon in Colwood.

The West Shore RCMP was called to the 2800-block of Ocean Boulevard at approximately noon after reports that an off-leash dog attacked and killed another animal.

Const. Matt Baker confirmed the dog died from injuries sustained in the attack which occurred under the bridge.

According to Don Brown, chief bylaw officer with the Capital Regional District, one owner was tossing a ball for his dog, which is a mixed-breed bulldog, when another smaller terrier tried to get the ball.

The owner then leashed his bulldog and moved further down the beach. Brown said the owner saw the terrier at the last minute before the bulldog grabbed it by its neck and killed it.

The owner of the bulldog has made arrangements to have the animal put down and no charges have been laid.

The majority of Esquimalt Lagoon is an on-leash area, up until the washrooms. Past the washrooms are off-leash areas, as wellas below the tide line.

The incident occurred in the off-leash area.

Along with police, Colwood bylaw officers and the Capital Regional District’s animal control agency were also on scene. The CRD has taken control of the file.

More to come.
