A police watchdog body has been notified after a possibly impaired driver died in hospital on the weekend.
According to an IIO information bulletin, Nanaimo RCMP advised that a man died in hospital Oct. 28. IIO notes that at 1:15 a.m., police received a call about a possible impaired driver,
“The driver was located and appeared to be impaired,” noted the IIO.
Officers assessed and decided that “due to the male’s intoxication, he should be transported to hospital.”
According to City of Nanaimo’s fire incident response data, first responders were called at 2:10 a.m. to Bramblewood Lane, which an IIO spokeswoman confirmed was the location of the incident.
“Before [paramedics] arrived, the male went into medical distress and officers administered medical assistance. The male was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition. The coroner later advised the male died in hospital,” the information bulletin notes.
The IIO advised that it is investigating to determine whether the death was related to actions or inactions of police at the scene.
