Pedestrian critical after being hit on Island Highway south of Nanaimo

A pedestrian is in hospital with critical injuries and the highway in the Cedar-Duke Point area south of Nanaimo remains clogged as Nanaimo RCMP investigate the incident.

The incident took place 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25 on Highway 1 near the Duke Point overpass, according to a press release.

The adult was taken to local hospital and is in critical condition and the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is co-operating with investigators.

The highway, going north to Nanaimo is reduced to single-lane traffic from the Duke Point overpass to the interchange at Cedar Road and “the Cedar Road interchange northbound lane is also closed, the press release said.

The closures are estimated to remain in effect for at least three more hours.
