Three residents of an Oak Bay independent living facility are recovering well after testing positive for COVID-19 on Sunday (Jan. 2).

Shannon Oaks living facility administrator Craig Reed said all 115 of their residents are triple vaccinated and the three who have contracted the virus are only facing minor symptoms.

“We’re thankful it’s been really mild,” he said.

All of the independent living facility’s staff are also vaccinated and Reed said the three cases are the first they’ve experienced since the start of the pandemic.

Until the infected residents recover, Reed said they’ve suspended group activities and closed the dining room. Residents are receiving snacks and meals to their rooms, but Reed said they’re still able to take a walk through the halls with a mask on or head outside for some fresh air.

He said Shannon Oaks is also following new provincial orders restricting visits to essential visitors only.

On Dec. 28 Island Health also declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Amica Douglas House seniors’ care home in Victoria, where two staff members have tested positive.

On Jan. 1, the health authority announced another outbreak in two rooms of the general medicine unit at the Victoria General Hospital. As of Friday, two patients have tested positive.
