A North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP officer was in the right place at the right time, on June 6, to help a injured red-tailed hawk.
Const. Kyle Hicks was following up on an investigation at a home in Cowichan Bay when he was told about the injured bird.
The adult hawk had been seen hopping around for 20 minutes, and not getting off the ground.
Used to dealing with people more than animals, Const. Hicks called the Raptor Rescue Society for some advice.
The advice: if you can catch the hawk, bring it to the intake centre at the Raptors in Duncan.
With that directive, along with a towel in hand, Const. Hicks was able to catch the hawk and place it into a box for the BC conservation officer to transport.
The hawk was assessed by the Raptor Rescue Society who then sent him off to a veterinary clinic for treatment.
“The Raptor Rescue Society cares for injured raptors with the goal of returning them back into the wild,” said North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP spokesperson Const. Pam Bolton. “With the determination of Const. Hicks and assistance of the BC Conservation Officer, we were able to get the hawk into the right hands where he will have a chance to recover safely.”
The folks are the Raptors Centre could not be reached before the Citizen’s press deadline.
