On Sunday, Nov. 21, 10.5 tonnes of illegally dumped garbage was lifted from the base of Little Mountain, south of Parksville.

That weight, combined with the 14 tonnes removed during two previous trips, brought the grand total to 24.5 tonnes.

“This has been a three-year project for the Rotary Club of Parksville, the residents of Little Mountain and the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers,” wrote Diana Matsuda in an email to PQB News. She noted both Kestrel Helicopters and Dave Bedard & Sons Contracting Ltd. were instrumental to the project’s success.

“It was a true community volunteer effort,” wrote Matsuda.

Sunday’s airlift, which took place between 10 a.m. and noon, was the last major removal of garbage from the mountain since the project’s start in 2019.

The lifted garbage was lowered to a location at the end of Bellevue Road and then sorted into bins and trucks for transport to the Church Road Transfer Station.

Matsuda hopes to see Little Mountain remain in it’s natural pristine state after the massive cleanup efforts by volunteers.
