The city wants to hear input from residents and businesses on how to reduce reliance on single-use shopping bags.
According to a city news release, single-use plastic bags can be recycled, but many aren’t and can end up in waterways, storm drainage systems and green spaces. Still others end up in the region’s curbside recycling system where they contaminate loads that would otherwise be recyclable and there are sustainable alternatives, such as reusable shopping bags.
The city is seeking public input through a survey that will be open until May 31 on a proposed regulation covering plastic shopping bags. Survey results will be considered when the final bylaw comes back to the city council table.
