Nanaimo RCMP investigating suspicious fire in high school’s community garden

Shed burned on John Barsby Secondary School property

Nanaimo RCMP would like to speak with a person of interest who was seen near a suspicious fire on the weekend.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded to a fire in a garden shed at John Barsby Secondary School’s community garden shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday, April 3.

Firefighters doused the fire, but not before significant damage to the shed, which will have to be destroyed, said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien in an e-mail to the News Bulletin.

Nanaimo RCMP and Nanaimo Fire Rescue are investigating.

The person who was seen in the area of the fire was described as bald and carrying a scooter.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP detachment’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and refer to file No. 2022-11222.
