Diver Lake Park is closed and a corner of an apartment building at the intersection of Rosehill Street and Vancouver Avenue in Nanaimo are behind police barricades as RCMP investigators probe the sites for evidence in an missing person case.
The work is expected to continue possibly into the weekend and police at Diver Lake Park said the park will be closed for the remainder of Thursday and possibly Friday.
Police in Nanaimo are not saying what the searches are for other than they’re related to a case of a missing person who is believed to have met with foul play.
“It will be ongoing for two or three days,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “There’s going to be a search of Diver Lake and area and there’s going to be a search of a unit in an apartment building on Rosehill near Vancouver.”
Nanaimo RCMP are not saying what the searches are for other than they’re connected to a case of a “historical missing person” who was believed to have met with foul play.
“It’s not related to Lisa Marie [Young],” O’Brien said. “We can’t say any more on that at all, who the person may be, when it happened, and it’s a very dynamic, fluid investigation and, for investigative reasons, we will not be providing any further information.”
The search site on Rosehill Street is an apartment in Regency Manor.
The Diver Lake Park involves a large section of property and shoreline.
O’Brien said the public will likely see tactical officers, underwater recovery teams, forensic identification units and members from other RCMP special units at the sites.
O’Brien did not say if further information would be released at a later date after the searches are completed.
