Nanaimo RCMP have closed an area around the police detachment due to suspicious packages.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, two cardboard boxes were found on the lawn adjacent to their detachment at around 10:30 a.m. this morning.
Police, out of caution, evacuated a portion of the detachment. They also closed a portion of Fitzwilliam Street, between Prideaux and Milton streets, to vehicle and pedestrian traffic until further notice.
An RCMP explosives dog has conducted a preliminary assessment, according to police, and the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit is being consulted.
Non-emergency lines have not been impacted by the closure. Police are asking anyone with information to call 250-754-2345.
