Police in Nanaimo hope they can reunite suspected stolen goods with their rightful owners after arresting two suspects who claimed to be collectors.

Nanaimo RCMP say they recovered a significant amount of suspected stolen property Feb. 22, but to date, investigators have been unable to determine where it came from or who owns it.

According to a police press release, the items were recovered when officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a local convenience store. In the vehicle – along with two individuals, known to the officers and also known to be active in property-related offences – and in plain view, were a number of items, which included men’s and women’s watches, semi-precious stones, jewelry, coins and foreign currency.

Asked about the items, the male suspects allegedly stated they were collectors, “which did not sit well with the officers,” the release noted. Based on the evidence, the items were seized out of a concern they were obtained through criminal activity.

Anyone with information about the ownership of any of these items is asked to contact Const. Fabrice Cambry of the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2020-7117. Note that the Nanaimo detachment is currently closed to the public due to the COVID-19 health crisis.
