The school district says Nanaimo District Secondary School is back to classes as usual after it was placed under lockdown protocol this morning, Sept. 25.

“There was a suspicious individual and the RCMP were called to investigate,” said Dale Burgos, Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools’ spokesperson. “But in a matter of minutes, it was determined that it was fine and we lifted the lockdown.”

Burgos said based on proximity to NDSS, the school district’s administration centre was placed in a hold-and-secure, which is used if there is a security concern in the neighbourhood.

No one is allowed to enter or exit the building, although normal activities continue inside in that situation, according to school policy.

Nanaimo RCMP said the situation is under control.
