The fire that seriously damaged Hornby Island’s only school appears to have been arson.
Comox Valley RCMP issued the following release today.
“On Aug. 26, the Comox Valley RCMP was called to a suspicious fire at the Hornby Island School and Community Centre.
“When police arrived at the school, firefighters were still working to extinguish the fire. Once the fire had been extinguished, it was obvious that a large part of the school had been burned.
“For the days following the fire, the Comox Valley RCMP, General Investigation Section had investigators at the scene to determine the cause of the fire,” said Comox Valley RCMP Const. Monika Terragni, media relations officer.
“Investigators can now confirm that the fire is suspicious in nature and they have identified a person of interest in connection with that fire.”
Police wish to speak with any additional witnesses who have information about this fire.
“If you have not spoken with the police and you saw anything suspicious before, during, or after the fire, please call us,” she added.
