The new semester will start on a sour note for music students at Nanaimo’s Wellington Secondary School.

A suspicious fire scorched the entranceway to the band room at the high school on Mexicana Road the morning of Monday, Jan. 2.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief David Dales said the department responded at 6:30 a.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls, and said firefighters were able to quickly knock the fire down. Aside from some minor water damage inside, the damage is to the exterior of the structure.

The assistant chief said the fire was deemed suspicious because it was on school property and on the outside of a building away from any electrical outlets, so Nanaimo Fire Rescue and Nanaimo RCMP will be investigating.

“There wasn’t a string of nuisance fires or anything last night, so there was nothing to connect,” Dales said. “It was just one small fire on the exterior of the building, quickly knocked down by our firefighters.”
