Due to extensive flooding on Monday, Cowichan Tribes issued an evacuation order for several areas within its jurisdiction.

Cowichan Tribes members must leave the areas immediately.

The areas effected by the order include:

• Clem Clem from Samuel Road to Cowichan Bay Road

• Quamichan Road West

• Tyup Road

• Sahilton Road east of Modeste Road

• East side of Modeste Road

• Wil’seem Road

• South side of Boys Road, East of Modeste Road

• Trestle Road and Miller Road near the highway

“We understand that flooding and temporary relocations can be challenging and we are here to support members,” said a statement signed by acting Chief Cindy Daniels. “We are doing this to keep community members safe.”

An evacuation/reception centre has been set up at the Cowichan Community Centre on James Street. Members who need assistance can call 250-732-1475.

Evacuees are instructed to shut off all gas and electrical appliances other than refrigerators and freezers and close all windows and doors. Gates should be closed but not locked. Take critical items such as medicine, purse, wallet and keys if they are immediately available. Take pets in kennels or on leashes.

Check on neighbours or family members who may need assistance. Due to COVID-19, do not share vehicles between households.

If you are in immediate danger and need assistance, call 9-1-1.
