The intersection of Terminal Avenue, Princess Royal Avenue and St. George Street kept emergency first responders busy with three motor vehicle incidents in one day yesterday.

In a span of less than 12 hours, Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews attended a three-vehicle collision at 9:30 a.m., a pedestrian struck in a crosswalk at 12:20 p.m. and a minor collision between two vehicles at 7:05 p.m. B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics were called to all three incidents.

According to ICBC data, there were six crashes at that intersection in 2019 and 46 crashes there during the five-year period from 2015-2019.

There were six motor vehicle incidents listed on Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s call-out sheet on a rainy Monday. There was also an incident on East Wellington Road at about 4:30 p.m. in which a vehicle struck a parked transport truck and there were two additional crashes reported on Bowen Road that occurred with 20 minute of one another between 4:20 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Nanaimo RCMP are cautioning drivers to be extra careful when driving in stormy fall and winter conditions.

“The wind and rainy conditions are expected for the foreseeable future,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “Drivers should be thinking seriously about having winter tires installed. Also, it is essential to reduce speeds and ensure lights are on, including tail lights.”
