A vehicle crashed into a sheriff’s van near the North Island community of Port Alice last night.
A driver was looking to turn onto the Port Alice Road coming off Highway 19 when they cut off a sheriff’s van, resulting in a collision. Port Hardy mounties received the call around 6:30 p.m. The first police responder was on site by 7:05 p.m.
According to a passerby, there were at least two police cars with mounties flagging traffic through. Two tow trucks were also on scene by 7:30 p.m. to service the vehicles.
Cpl. Martin Giguere at the Port Hardy RCMP detachment said via phone interview that “the sheriff’s vehicle was travelling down to Campbell River, southbound on Highway 19” when the collision had occurred.
The driver, heading northbound, was turning into the Port Alice entrance from the left lane when they crashed into the sheriff’s van. Both drivers did not, in fact, sustain any serious injuries. “The vehicle was coming north wanting to turn left,” he confirmed, having already said that the driver ended up cutting off the sheriff’s van.
Giguere also mentioned that there was no criminal component to the collision. Port Hardy mounties have since issued a violation ticket to the driver as a result of the multi-vehicle crash.
