The District of Tofino released a statement on Monday in response to its staff’s vote to strike on June 9.
The statement confirms that both sides plan to meet with a mediator appointed by the Labour Relations Board to hopefully resolve the dispute later this month.
“We welcome this positive and important next step towards our mutual goal of a new agreement. We are confident we have enough shared goals and interests to reach an agreement in a timely fashion,” the statement reads. “We are proud of the deep relationships we have with our staff at the District and have great respect for them and the work that they do.”
It adds that neither the town’s municipal council nor staffers will be available for comment outside of official statements, but expresses confidence that essential services will not be disrupted.
“Our focus is, and will always be, on the health and safety of the residents of Tofino, as well as our staff, by ensuring a safe and healthy work environment,” it reads. “In the weeks ahead, regardless of the outcome of the mediation, residents can be assured that essential services will be maintained to ensure the health and safety of our community.”
