Steps will soon be take to ensure Port McNeill’s most prominent intersection isn’t also its most dangerous.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has announded design work work aimed at improving safety for people travelling on Highway 19 at the Campbell Way intersection in Port McNeill.

“Over my years as MLA for the North Island, I have heard many safety concerns from community members about the Highway 19 and Campbell Way intersection,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena. “As minister, addressing safety concerns is my highest priority. A proposed design, ensuring drivers have a clear view of vehicles turning on and off the highway at this main access to Port McNeill, will be brought forward very soon, with construction starting later this year.”

Ministry staff are working closely with the Town of Port McNeill and first responders, to improve visibility at this location for safety and better community access. Design work is expected to be wrapped up and ready for the contract tender process this summer.

Construction is expected to take place this fall.

“The intersection at Highway 19 and Campbell Way – known in Port McNeill as ‘the T’ – has been the top of our list of priority asks of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for the past 10 years,” said Town of Port McNeill Mayor Shirley Ackland. “We are very happy our concerns have been heard by government and that this issue will be addressed.”

“We’ve had more accidents at ‘the T’ than anywhere else in our community, and it will be nice to see a fix,” said Dean Tait, Port McNeill fire chief.
