A ‘crown jewel’ private island near Nanaimo is on the real estate market.

Sear Island near Gabriola Island was listed by Sotheby’s International Realty Canada this past summer and is priced at $7.9 million.

The island is described by Sotheby’s as “the crown jewel of the Flat Top group” boasting 11 hectares of “pristine, natural beauty.”

The main house is 3,225 square feet, with five bedrooms. There is also a guest cabin, which is 955 square feet with an additional four bedrooms, and the island has a boat house, boat ramp, and a 90-foot deep-water dock capable of accommodating 100-foot yachts. Sear Island is fully serviced by B.C. Hydro via an underwater line.

Listing agent Nico Grauer said there’s been quite a bit of interest from potential buyers from North America and overseas. The most recent inquiry was from a German buyer, he said.

“I think in this market, people are really looking for that added sense of personal space and isolation and that’s what makes private islands extra special right now … for the people that can afford it,” Grauer said.

He said much of the interest has come from yacht owners, as the Gulf Islands “is the centre of a boating paradise.”

Grauer said he believes the owners have a good chance of getting their asking price and noted that private islands only get listed every so often.

“They’re few and far between,” he said.
