The Capital Regional District is warning residents about a wastewater spill after a mechanical failure at Ganges Wastewater Treatment Plant on Salt Spring Island.

The failure was “likely as a result of the current cold temperatures,” the CRD said in a statement.

While crews cleaned up most of the spill, some sewage ran overland, entering the stormwater system leading from the facility to Ganges Creek and washed out into Ganges Harbour.

The CRD has cordoned off some nearby walkways and posted signs warning residents about the potential health risk the wastewater could pose.

“As a precaution and in consultation with Island Health, the affected area will be posted with public health advisory signs until environmental sample results indicate that the affected area no longer poses a health risk,” the CRD said in a statement.
