The Town of Qualicum Beach is relaxing its zoning bylaw to allow frontline workers to live in recreation vehicles to isolate themselves from the rest of their families during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Town council authorized staff not to enforced regulations that would prohibit families from using RVs in their own properties as a dwelling unit for their members who are frontline workers. It’s a way of helping curtail the spread of COVID-19.
Coun. Scott Harrison wanted to relay this message to the community.
“If you’re in that circumstance, feel free to reach out to staff and they can walk you through that,” said Harrison.
For those interested in doing this, here are some conditions laid out by the town:
• The occupant of the temporary housing must be an eligible recipient of “Province of B.C.’s temporary pandemic pay” that is self-isolating during the COVID-19 pandemic.
• The temporary housing must have access to adequate sanitary facilities, as determined by the town’s building official.
• The owner of the property, as well as the occupant, must sign an affidavit promising that the accommodation will be vacated within 30 days after B.C. lifts the provincial state of emergency.
• The temporary housing must be located entirely on private property.
Before the rules were relaxed, RVs weren’t permitted as a place to live in nor are they allowed if there’s already a house and a secondary dwelling on a property.
