Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools is warning of another potential COVID-19 exposure in one of its schools.

In a social media post, the school district said John Barsby Secondary School had a potential exposure on Jan. 29. Island Health has completed contact tracing, it said.

Since Sunday, the district notified parents and guardians of Qwam Qwum Stuwixwulh School students about a COVID-19 exposure on Jan. 28 and a potential exposure at Rock City Elementary on Jan. 27. COVID-19 exposures were also reported at Bayview Elementary on Jan. 27 and 29.

The school district advises people to refer to Island Health’s school exposures web page for more information.

There were recent reports of a potential COVID-19 variant exposure at a Lower Mainland school, and when asked about concerns about spread in a school setting, Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s health officer, said the provincial health ministry had been watching for variants for some time.

“We’ve been targeting school-aged children and so far, none of the tests on anybody who’s in the school system have turned up positive … we know that transmission is very uncommon in our schools and we have been working with the school communities,” Henry said at a press conference on Monday. “
