The crime rate in Courtenay has generally decreased since last year at this time, in terms of theft, property damage, and break and enters. But there has been eight more assaults from April 1 to June 30, says outgoing Comox Valley RCMP Insp. Tim Walton.

“Ten of those 61 (assaults) were spousal or partner assault,” Walton said Monday in his final presentation to Courtenay council.

“I’m happy to report that the number of calls for service has not increased. But before you run to the bank with this news, I remind you that last year was our busiest year ever on record.”

Compared to the second quarter in 2017, police have dealt with 28 fewer files.

“In terms of violent crimes, we have a single robbery this quarter, and we were successful in laying a charge.”

While there has been a “considerable decrease in property crime,” Walton said the biggest drop has been theft from vehicles. Nevertheless, he reminds car owners to be vigilant about locking doors.

During four years of serving the Comox Valley, Walton is proud to see a revived downtown bike patrol, and a greater police presence in schools.

“I firmly believe that your police bring a wide perspective in dealing with issues. The 63 men and women you can count on around the clock to help this community be a great, safe place to live, are backed by another 20 or so civilians who work behind the scenes…Our employees continue to amaze me day in and day out.”

Walton is bound for Victoria, where he will be the Officer in Charge of Island District Traffic Services. He will be replaced by Insp. Mike Kurvers.
