Comox Valley Regional District, CUPE agree on two-year deal

The Comox Valley Regional District and CUPE 556, which represents about 84 employees, have agreed on a new two-year collective agreement. On ratification, it will provide continued labour relations stability within CUPE-staffed services in the CVRD.

“From an employer perspective, we continue to appreciate the support and business acumen of CUPE representatives,” Julie Bradley, the CVRD’s executive manager of human Resources, said in a news release. “We are pleased with the results of bargaining and moving forward with this partnership to enhance service delivery in the Comox Valley.”

The CUPE positions range from administrative support to technically skilled roles in engineering, procurement, wastewater, water and solid waste.

The agreement, which will cover Jan. 1, 2019 until Dec. 31, 2020 provides a two per cent wage increase per year. Other highlights in the agreement include certainty around service delivery to the community as well as health benefit enhancements.

“We would like to acknowledge the positive working relationship we have with the CVRD,” said Karen Garrett, president of CUPE 556. “Because of this relationship between the employer and our members, negotiations were respectful and successful for both parties. Our members throughout the Comox Valley work hard and take pride in the services we provide in our communities. On behalf of CUPE 556 members, we continue to look forward to serving our community and providing these important services.”
