Comox Mayor Paul Ives has announced he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming fall municipal election.
Ives made the announcement at the conclusion of the town’s regularly scheduled council meeting, Wednesday evening, and received a standing ovation from fellow council members and staff.
He has served the municipality for 16 years - first being voted in as a councillor in 2002 and then again in 2005, then for three terms as mayor.
“For me, the time has come to step down from this role as mayor - it’s not been an easy decision for me, but one that has been made easier after much discussion with my spouse and immediate family who’ve been supportive of my time away from them,” he explained.
Ives said over the years he has served, much has been accomplished by the town’s staff and council, including the needs for an improved library, recreation and parks amenities and dedicated bike lanes and greenways. He added the Town’s infrastructure requirements are being met on an ongoing basis while having paid off all of its capital debt earlier this year.
Ives thanked members of council and staff who worked together in “an exciting and dynamic time to be part of local government.”
He added it is his hope people who have been making solid contributions elsewhere in the community will be given an opportunity to step up and give back as an elected official. As the youngest member currently sitting at the council table at age 54, he encouraged youth participation in the Oct. 20 election.
“I would, in particular, like to encourage those younger than me … and those who can help represent diversity and gender balance at our council table, to consider putting their names on a ballot.”
Ives said he will continue working at his Ives Burger law firm.
