A man arrested Wednesday after allegedly threatening a Nanaimo police officer with a knife has been charged.

Kym Robert Arkell, 33, of Nanaimo, was arrested Wednesday when Nanaimo RCMP knocked him down with a police vehicle in Beban Park.

Police allege Arkell pulled a knife and threatened to kill a police officer who confronted him near Beban Park before he ran off only to be arrested moments later. He was taken to hospital and treated for injuries.

Arkell appeared in provincial court in Nanaimo today (March 8), where he was charged with uttering threats, obstruction, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, resisting arrest and breach of probation.

Arkell was released from custody earlier this year following a conviction for a similar incident in August.

Arkell will be held in custody until his next court appearance March 27, which will be made via video conference, according to Nanaimo RCMP.
