B.C. Ferries is back in business and “loading as many vehicles as possible” Monday morning, after cancelling all evening sailings last night on major routes.

High winds and rough seas made travel tough for B.C. Ferries for a third straight day Sunday as the ferry corporation had to cancel sailings “due to adverse weather conditions,” according to a travel advisory.

Nanaimo’s Departure Bay, West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay, Victoria’s Swartz Bay service to Tsawwassen and the route connecting Nanaimo’s Duke Point to Tsawwassen each cancelled all sailings during day and eventually extended that into the evening.

The Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route ran on a modified schedule and cancellations impacted the Port McNeil-Alert Bay-Sointula route as well.

The tweet announcing the cancellations also promised additional sailings departing Greater Victoria’s Swartz Bay at 8 a.m. and Metro Vancouver’s Tsawwassen at 10 a.m.

It is not clear how many people travelling from the Island to destinations elsewhere were stranded, but the number is likely in the thousands.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us,” said BC Ferries in a statement on its website yesterday. “We don’t take the decision to cancel sailings lightly, as we know customers rely on us to get to their destinations. We will resume service as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The travel advisory notes that B.C. Ferries appreciates customers’ patience and apologizes for any inconvenience resulting from the cancellations.
