Nanaimo RCMP are investigating an incident of arson after a piece of machinery was burned at the playground at Maffeo Sutton Park this past weekend.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue firefighters were called to the scene at about 11:40 p.m. on Saturday night, and put out the fire that destroyed a compactor.

The machine was being used to help build the park’s new accessible playground. Police say the compactor, worth $2,500, was destroyed, and suspects also tampered with fuel filters on an excavator on the site, though that machine wasn’t damaged.

“Currently there are no suspects or witnesses,” noted an RCMP press release. “Additionally there has been no connection made to the incident earlier in the evening at the Circle K convenience store, in which a fire destroyed a portion of the interior and exterior of the building.”

Anyone with information about the fire at the playground is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
