Suspected fentanyl dealer arrested, was living next door to daycare in Victoria

Cybercrime trend, stabbings and armed robberies: VicPD chief’s quarterly report

A suspected fentanyl drug trafficker believed to be operating next door to a daycare was arrested last week in Victoria, according to VicPD.

Chief Const. Del Manak – presenting a third quarter 2017 report at committee of the whole Thursday morning – told Victoria council a dealer suspected of selling crystal meth and cocaine was “residing next door to a daycare, right across the street from an elementary school.” Manak said people were climbing the fence of the daycare to buy drugs. Surveillance units were completing the arrest last Thursday, Nov. 30.

VicPD has not released any further information on this incident.

The chief, giving councillors a sense of the types of crimes the department deals with, detailed a robbery with an “edged” weapon at Quadra and Yates streets on Tuesday – the suspect was ultimately arrested at gunpoint – and provided audio recordings of calls ranging from nuisance complaints to alleged assaults. He also noted the growing cybercrime trend in Victoria and Esquimalt.

Figures from Manak’s verbal report included:

  • 225 bikes reported stolen, 3,000 bikes now on VicPD’s bike registry
  • 9 deployments of the emergency response team
  • 3 suspects barricading themselves
  • 4 high-risk warrant arrests where emergency response team was needed
  • 6 stabbings
  • 2 cases of excited delirium
