Suspect arrested in New Year's Day shooting in Nanaimo's south end

Police in Nanaimo have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting and aggravated assault at a south-end business Jan. 1.

Nanaimo RCMP's Serious Crime Unit has arrested a man in connection with a New Year's Day shooting. 

According to an RCMP press release, Jeffery Benvin, 47, was arrested without incident as a result of the Jan. 1 shooting at a south-end business. 

The victim, a 43-year old man, sustained life-threatening injuries after he was physically assaulted, and shot with a firearm, the press release stated. 

The victim was treated at the scene by B.C. Emergency Health Services and then airlifted to a hospital in Victoria. He has since been released and is recovering.

Benvin has been charged with discharging a firearm with intent to disfigure, aggravated assault and use of a firearm while committing an indictable offence.
