Snow Day called for Cowichan Valley students

Schools are closed

The dream of many a child has come true as Cowichan Valley School District officials have declared Tuesday, Feb. 4 a Snow Day. All schools within the district are affected.

"Due to the adverse weather, all district schools are closed today, and all field trips and extra-curricular activities are cancelled," said the district on its website and social media notices. "Thank you for your understanding as we make decisions in the best interest of student safety.   We wish all students and families a safe snow day."

Private Schools Queen Margaret's, Queen of Angels, St. John's Academy Shawnigan Lake, and Duncan Christian School have followed suit. Clements Centre day programs are not running and all Cowichan Tribes departments are closed as well Tuesday.

All Vancouver Island University campuses have also been closed.

Environment Canada had issued a winter weather warning, suggesting that though accumulation would be variable, upward of 20cm of snow could be expected overnight Monday into Tuesday. That warning was updated Tuesday morning to include a further snowfall of five cm expected across East Vancouver Island on Tuesday.

Many small businesses have also shut down for the day and local governments have issued notices regarding their operations, including garbage and recycling pick-up but given the situation is evolving, it's best to call before you leave.

Travel interruptions are expected. As of 4:30 a.m. Drive BC is reporting compact snow on the Trans-Canada Highway between Shawnigan Lake Road and Mt. Sicker Road with most local roads still heavy with snow as of 7 a.m.

More to come as the situation evolves
