Two people face charges in the wake of a driver "dangerously" evading officers "at a high rate of speed" in a stolen vehicle, according to the Saanich Police Department.

On Jan. 28, near the intersection of Burnside Road and Harriet Street, a Saanich PD officer attempted to stop a vehicle that had been reported stolen, but the driver sped away. Saanich police didn't pursue it, but identified the driver during the interaction.

On Feb. 6, a man and woman were arrested in connection with the incident.

Savannah Chase faces one count of motor vehicle theft, four counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and one count of theft under $5,000. Cayden Blacklaws faces a charge of flight from police and one count of dangerous operation of a conveyance.

"There have been a series of flights from police in our region recently, which posed significant danger to the neighbourhoods where they occurred and the responding officers," Insp. Damian Kowalewich said in a news release. "We are grateful that no one was harmed by the reckless actions of the two individuals who have been arrested. Knowing that they are in custody should provide reassurance to our community, as they are no longer a threat to public safety.”
