A Campbell River environmental group is urging the public to take action if they see sediment runoff and erosion washing into streams that support salmon.
Greenways Land Trust shared on social media it is receiving reports and seeing large sediment releases and erosion affecting salmon-bearing streams with all the heavy rain this fall.
The organization advises reporting any spills to storm drains, ditches, or waterways in Campbell River immediately, especially those affecting salmon habitats.
"The more people who report the spill, the more attention it will receive and the sooner it can be addressed," reads the post.
Some steps include contacting Emergency Management BC at 1-800-663-3456. All spills, including significant sediment releases, must be reported. Reporting is legally required if you are responsible for the spill, and strongly advised if you witness one.
The public can also call the City of Campbell River Dogwood Operations at 250-286-4033. (After hours: 250-287-7444, which connects to the Fire Department).
When preparing a report, be sure to include the following details: contact information for the person making the report, the party responsible, and the owner of the spilled substance.
In addition, include the date, time, and location of the spill. It is also important to provide a description and estimated quantity of the substance, identify the source of the spill, mention any government agencies present on-site, and include any photographs of the spill.
Chemical spills and sediment releases can be harmful to all kinds of species, including salmon eggs in creek beds.
