A disturbing break-in at an apartment in Springridge Manor in Duncan in the early hours of Jan. 27 has led to an arrest.
Tenant Connor Ferguson said he wasn’t at home at the time and his apartment was vacant, but a security camera he has in his dwelling recorded a man breaking through his front door at approximately 3:45 a.m. with a bench-press weight.
Ferguson said the man then walked into his apartment carrying a large kitchen knife and went directly to his bedroom.
“He didn’t take anything, even though there were a number of valuable items in the apartment, and left again after just about 15 seconds,” Ferguson said.
“He wasn’t wearing a mask or anything but I didn’t recognize the guy and I have no idea why he chose to break into my apartment and went straight to my bedroom. I contacted the RCMP right away.”
RCMP Sgt. Trevor Busch said police responded immediately to the call from Ferguson and began an investigation into the break-in.
He said the investigators obtained a copy of the security video and examined it to identify the suspect, who appears to be a bearded man who made no attempt to hide his face.
Busch said officers then began canvasing the area and spoke with witnesses of the incident to obtain all available evidence.
“An adult male was arrested (on Jan. 27) for the offence of residential breaking and entering, and was released on a court undertaking,” he said.
“This incident is believed to be isolated and we do not believe there is a further risk to the tenants of the apartment complex or the community. As this matter is now before the courts, I cannot provide further information at this time.”
Ferguson said he was very happy when the police called him to say an arrest had been made, but he's concerned that the man was released so soon after he was taken into custody.
“I still have no idea why my apartment was targeted,” he said. "I wonder what would have happened had I been home at the time."
