Your PQB News continues to earn accolades.

News Media Canada recently announces the 2024 winners of the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards, with the PQB News bringing home a trio of honours.

Photographer Michael Briones earned two awards, winning first place in the best sports photo class, circulation class more than 10,000 (for his well-timed shot of Parksville Royals baseball action), and doubling up by also finishing second in the same category.

The PQB News earned another silver medal with Kevin Forsyth's section finishing second in the best coverage of the arts category, in the 10,000-plus circulation class.

"These type of honours continue to reflect the amazing work of our entire team," said PQB News publisher Teresa Bird. "They can all be proud of their efforts. Here in PQB we have such vibrant arts and sports communities, and we take pride in shining a light on their accomplishments."

Earlier this year, the PQB News earned a Ma Murray Award as B.C.’s best community newspaper in its circulation class.

Briones captured another pair of individual awards, winning gold for sports photos and silver in the photo essay category. PQB News/VI Free Daily editor Philip Wolf won silver in the best columnist category for ‘Shrieking, shirtless car wash guy may be a bee-sting victim’.

The PQB News, part of Black Press Media, is one of three papers in a central Vancouver Island group overseen by publisher Bird.

Alberni Valley News editor Susie Quinn earned a second-place CCNA in the best national editorial class, with reporter Elena Rardon also winning silver in the best business writing category. Tofino-Ucluelet Westerly News editor Andrew Bailey won bronze for best sports coverage in their circulation class
