Community library theft an 'unwelcome surprise' for Coombs residents

Small neighbourhood library mysteriously disappears, books and all

This community library disappeared from Coombs in July.

Coombs residents are on the lookout for a missing neighbourhood library.

The free-standing 'take-a-book, leave-a-book' library was a collaboration between neighbours living close to the intersection of Pratt Road and Grafton Avenue, where the library used to sit close to the post boxes, according to Pat Woods.

Woods said her husband provided the funds to have a handyman build the structure. One neighbour created a wood-burned sign that said 'Our Little Library' and a second neighbour secured the library onto a post.

“It was truly a community effort," Woods said.

At first Woods thought a considerate person had taken the library away to make some repairs, but after a week passed it seemed clear that was not the case.

It was taken some time after July 18, Woods said, when it was last seen on its post.

“We would love to have it back," she said. "I would imagine that if it doesn’t show up then we’ll have another one built and stock it with books. It just leaves you with a strange feeling that somebody would do that.”

Oceanside RCMP received a report about the incident during the week of July 15, according to Sgt. Shane Worth. There are no suspects.
