One of America’s premier storytellers and songwriters is kicking off the Farquhar Presents Series at the University of Victoria on Sept. 29.
Rosanne Cash brings the music from her latest album, She Remembers Everything, and more to UVic’s Farquhar Auditorium as part of an international tour. The new material marks a return to Cash’s more personal songwriting after a series of Americana classics like 2014’s award-winning The River and the Thread.
She describes the women’s narratives in her newest recording as reflecting “a woman’s real life complex experiences and layered understanding.”
It’s the latest in a storied career that includes 15 albums, 21 Top 40 hits, and 11 Number 1 singles.
In addition to her musical accomplishments, Cash is an author and journalist. Her essays have appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Nation and other publications. Her memoir, Composed was called “one of the best accounts of American life you’ll likely ever read,” in a review in the Chicago Tribune.
Cash’s new book, Bird on a Blade illustrates her lyrics with artist Dan Rizzles’ images.
The musician was Perspective Series Artist at Carnegie Hall and curated a roots music series at the famous New York City venue in 2015-16 and returned as its creative partner for the 2019-20 season. She has been Artist in Residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2015.
Cash was Resident Artist Director at SF Jazz in 2017-18 and last year won the Spirit of Americana Free Speech Award. She has also garnered an honorary doctorate at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Cash is currently writing lyrics for the musical Norma Rae.
The Sept. 29 show at UVic starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $45-$79 and are available online, along with more information, at tickets.uvic.ca, or by calling the box office at 250-721-8480.
Cash is also performing Oct. 1 at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo.
